I was introduced awhile back to the existence of the “Buddhabrot,” a specific Mandelbrot, a mathematical rendering of fractals, complex shapes in which the whole is mirrored in smaller parts.
In nature, fractals appear in trees where a tree trunk splits into branches, which split into smaller branches repeatedly. As the tree grows, the new branches mirror the overall structure.
Thinking about organizational culture and belonging, while we cannot say that every individual mirrors the identity of the whole organization, individuals are certainly impacted by the organization culture. And I believe we can say the inverse: the organizational culture definitely depends on those contained within it, particularly those who wield power.
I want to meditate further on this concept, but since I added the Buddhabrot image to my home page, I thought I’d explain why.
